Lufthansa is offering its guests more comfort and a modernized cabin product not only on long-haul routes, but also on short- and medium-haul flights. A total of 38 A320 aircraft have been undergoing retrofits since spring of last year, receiving new seats from manufacturer Geven as well as significantly larger overhead bins, USB ports at every seat as well as tablet and smartphone holders. Scope: 38 Airbus A320 aircraft will be modernized by 2029. First Aircraft: The first retrofitted A320, registration D-AIZY (“Zulu Yankee”), returned to service in February 2026. Cabin Upgrades: - New seats from Italian manufacturer Geven, with ergonomic design and adjustable headrests. - Business Class seats feature deeper recline for added comfort. - USB-A and USB-C ports at every seat, plus holders for tablets and smartphones. Overhead Bins: 40% larger, allowing vertical stowage of bags. This speeds up boarding and increases carry-on capacity. Design Inspiration: The cabin design draws from Lufthansa’s new long-haul fleet interiors, aiming for a consistent premium experience across routes. Retrofit Process: Each aircraft retrofit takes about 30 days, involving 1,000 components from 100 suppliers. Strategic Intent Lufthansa wants to deliver a premium passenger experience even on short- and medium-haul flights, aligning the A320 family with the comfort and style of its long-haul fleet. This retrofit program is part of Lufthansa’s broader push to modernize cabins across its fleet, including recent upgrades to the A380 Business Class and the new Allegris cabins on the 787-9.
