NHAI Announces Major Public Relief: KYV Discontinued for Cars on New FASTag Issued after 1 February 2026

In a major step to enhance public convenience and eliminate post-activation harassment faced by highway users, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars (Car/Jeep/Van category FASTag) for all new FASTag issuances with effect from 1st February 2026.

Key Reform
- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars (Car/Jeep/Van category FASTag) on all new FASTags issued after 1 February 2026.
- This move is aimed at reducing post-activation harassment and delays faced by highway users.

Impact on Existing FASTags
- For FASTags already issued to cars:
- No routine KYV required anymore.
- KYV will only be necessary in specific complaint cases, such as:
- Loose FASTags
- Incorrect issuance
- Misuse

Stronger Pre-Activation Safeguards
To balance convenience with compliance, NHAI has tightened pre-activation validation norms for Issuer Banks:
- Mandatory VAHAN-based validation before activation.
- No post-activation validation allowed.
- RC-based validation only if VAHAN data is unavailable, with full accountability.
- Online FASTags also covered, requiring complete validation before activation.

Benefits
- Eliminates repeated follow-ups for customers.
- Shifts responsibility of validation entirely to Issuer Banks.
- Ensures a hassle-free, citizen-friendly FASTag ecosystem.
- Strengthens compliance while reducing grievances.

👉 In short: From February 2026, FASTag users with cars will enjoy a simpler, smoother activation process, with all verification completed upfront by banks—no more routine KYV headaches after activation.
