India Emerges as Global Leader in Railway Electrification with 99.6% Broad Gauge Network Electrified, Second Only to Switzerland

Electrification of railway network on Indian Railways has been taken up in mission mode. So far, about 99.6% of Broad Gauge (BG) network has been electrified.

Mission Electrification
- Coverage: 99.6% of the Broad Gauge (BG) network electrified.
- Remaining: Electrification of the last fraction is underway.
- Scale: One of the fastest and largest railway electrification programs globally.

Electrification Achievements
- Before 2014 (≈60 years): 21,801 route km electrified.
- 2014–2026 (≈12 years): 48,072 route km electrified.
- Total: Nearly the entire BG network transformed in just over a decade.

- CO₂ Emissions: Rail emits 11.5 g per tonne-km, vs 101 g by road (≈89% less).
- Diesel Savings: Reduced consumption by 185 crore litres (2024–25: 108 crore litres vs 293 crore litres in 2015–16).
- Foreign Exchange: Significant savings by cutting fuel imports.
- Renewables Integration:
- Solar: 1,161 MW commissioned (rooftop + land).
- Wind: 103 MW commissioned.
- Plans for hybrid systems with storage.

- 100% Electrified: Central, Eastern, Western, Northern, South Central, South Coast, South Eastern, East Coast, East Central, South East Central, West Central, Konkan, Kolkata Metro, North Central, North Eastern.
- Near Completion:
- North Western (99.8%)
- Northeast Frontier (98.7%)
- Southern (98.7%)
- South Western (96.1%)

State-wise Electrification
- 100% Electrified: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, UP, MP, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana, West Bengal, Kerala, J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan (99.8%), Tamil Nadu (98.3%).
- Lagging States: Assam (97.9%), Karnataka (96.8%), Goa (91.4%).

- Assured Funding & enhanced financial powers to field units.
- Monitoring: Strong project review mechanisms at all levels.
