The Ministry of Railways has announced a major accessibility initiative across the country: Wheelchair Availability: Wheelchairs are now provided at 5,868 railway stations nationwide, free of cost, to assist Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens. Escort Services: If attendants are unavailable, licensed porters (Sahayaks) can be hired at nominal rates to escort passengers. Lower Berth Quotas: Special quotas ensure easier access to lower berths for senior citizens, women above 45, and pregnant women. Reserved Seats: - 6–7 lower berths per Sleeper coach - 4–5 lower berths per 3AC coach - 3–4 lower berths per 2AC coach - Minimum of 7 seats reserved for senior citizens in general compartments Divyangjan Quotas: Reserved berths in Sleeper, 3AC/3E, Garib Rath SLRD coaches, and seats in 2S/CC classes. Ticketing Support: Separate counters at PRS centres for Divyangjan, senior citizens, ex-MPs/MLAs, journalists, and freedom fighters (where demand justifies). Online Concessions: Concessional ticket booking extended to Divyangjan and patients with certain illnesses, along with one escort. Battery Operated Vehicles (BOVs): 196 vehicles deployed at 79 major stations, prioritizing Divyangjan, senior citizens, sick passengers, and pregnant women. This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to inclusive travel and passenger comfort.
