Indian Railways Expands Accessibility for Divyangjan and Senior Citizens

The Ministry of Railways has announced a major accessibility initiative across the country:

Wheelchair Availability:
Wheelchairs are now provided at 5,868 railway stations nationwide, free of cost, to assist Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens.

Escort Services:
If attendants are unavailable, licensed porters (Sahayaks) can be hired at nominal rates to escort passengers.

Lower Berth Quotas:
Special quotas ensure easier access to lower berths for senior citizens, women above 45, and pregnant women.

Reserved Seats:
- 6–7 lower berths per Sleeper coach
- 4–5 lower berths per 3AC coach
- 3–4 lower berths per 2AC coach
- Minimum of 7 seats reserved for senior citizens in general compartments

Divyangjan Quotas:
Reserved berths in Sleeper, 3AC/3E, Garib Rath SLRD coaches, and seats in 2S/CC classes.

Ticketing Support:
Separate counters at PRS centres for Divyangjan, senior citizens, ex-MPs/MLAs, journalists, and freedom fighters (where demand justifies).

Online Concessions:
Concessional ticket booking extended to Divyangjan and patients with certain illnesses, along with one escort.

Battery Operated Vehicles (BOVs):
196 vehicles deployed at 79 major stations, prioritizing Divyangjan, senior citizens, sick passengers, and pregnant women.

This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to inclusive travel and passenger comfort.
