Plane Rude: The modern in-flight habits testing passengers’ patience

From filming TikToks (33%) to keeping up with your daily step count in the air (24%) new research from Booking.com reveals the modern in-flight habits frustrating passengers most - as travellers become increasingly divided over what’s acceptable behaviour at 30,000ft.

Modern In‑Flight Habits Testing Patience
- Research shows passengers are increasingly treating planes like their living rooms:
- 42% annoyed by people leaning over them for window photos.
- 33% irritated by TikTok filming.
- 23% frustrated by mid‑flight manicures.
- Nearly half (44%) feel flyers are “too comfortable” at 30,000 ft, yet 67% admit they behave the same as at home.

Food Offenders
- Strong‑smelling meals top the list of irritations (43%).
- Worst culprits: sushi (38%), garlic dishes (32%), boiled eggs (31%).

Comfort vs Etiquette
- 76% say comfort is their top priority, especially on long‑haul flights.
- But habits like going barefoot (25%) or doing yoga in the aisle (23%) push boundaries.

Avoiding Confrontation
- 31% prefer to suffer in silence rather than speak up.
- 36% vent to friends/family after landing instead.

Etiquette Expert’s Advice (Laura Windsor)
- Treat the cabin as a shared space, not your personal lounge.
- Save yoga flows for the terminal, keep seatmates out of TikTok content, and remember “a little self‑awareness at 30,000 feet goes a long way.”

Top 10 Annoying Behaviours
1. Watching videos/music without headphones (43%)
2. Bringing strong‑smelling food (43%)
3. Leaning over for window photos (42%)
4. Filming TikToks (33%)
5. Getting caught in someone else’s filming (30%)
6. Going barefoot (25%)
7. Walking the aisle for step counts (24%)
8. Doing yoga/stretching in the aisle (23%)
9. Doing a manicure mid‑flight (23%)
10. Using dental floss (18%)

This research really highlights how flying has become a clash between comfort and courtesy.
