Uber has announced a major safety push in India, introducing new industry-first features to enhance rider and driver security. Here’s a breakdown of the updates:
Record My Ride:
Drivers can securely record encrypted in-cab video using their own phones via the Uber app.
- Footage is encrypted and inaccessible to both Uber and the driver unless submitted in a safety report.
- Designed to provide peace of mind and accountability without compromising privacy.
Ambulance Assistance:
In partnership with Dial 4242, riders and drivers can now request emergency medical support directly through Uber’s 24x7 Safety Line.
Don’t Type & Drive:
The driver app restricts manual typing while the vehicle is in motion, reducing distracted driving risks.
Set Your Own PIN:
Riders can now create and mandate their own unique trip-verification PINs, giving them full control over trip validation.
Building on Past Innovations
These features add to Uber’s existing safety toolkit:
- Audio Recording
- Women Rider Preference
- Helmet Selfie Verification
- Seatbelt Reminders
- RideCheck, Safety Preferences, and anonymisation of phone numbers/addresses
Partnerships & Advocacy
- Uber continues to collaborate with India’s Ministry of Road Transport & Highways on the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan, promoting road safety awareness.
- Dedicated products like Uber for Teens and Uber for Seniors expand safe mobility options for families.
Leadership Voices
- Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister: praised Uber’s role in promoting safer road behavior and supporting emergency response.
- Sooraj Nair, Head of Safety Operations (India & South Asia): emphasized that safety innovation should become the industry baseline, not just a differentiator.
This rollout shows Uber’s strategy of combining technology, partnerships, and behavioral nudges to make rides safer and more accountable.
