IATA calls for stronger implementation of global standards, modernized GSE and digitalization in ground handling

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for stronger implementation of global standards, a transition to modernized ground support equipment (GSE) and greater digitalization in the ground handling sector. This will support safer, more efficient, sustainable, and resilient ground handling. IATA made the call at the 38th IATA Ground Handling Conference (IGHC), which opened in Cairo, hosted by EgyptAir.

Stronger Implementation of Global Standards
- Safety progress: In 2025, there were no fatal ground handling accidents and only one serious injury across nearly 40 million flights.
- Core references: IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) and Airport Handling Manual (AHM) are the industry benchmarks.
- Audit discipline: Nearly 300 audits were conducted under the revamped ISAGO model, supporting 230+ service providers at 250+ airports.
- Consistency push: IATA urged minimizing unnecessary variations in procedures, with 40% of organizations reporting no deviations.

Modernizing Ground Support Equipment (GSE)
- Persistent risk: Over 29,000 aircraft ground damage events were reported in 2025.
- Enhanced GSE: Anti-collision technology adoption is growing, with 75 stations recognized for reducing operational risk.
- Electric GSE: Transitioning to electric fleets can cut turnaround emissions by 35–52%, depending on equipment mix and power source.

Digitalization for Efficiency
- Data gaps: Manual processes and fragmented systems still cause baggage mishandling and loading errors.
- Baggage: The new IATA Baggage Community System (BCS) enables real-time visibility across the baggage journey.
- Aircraft loading: Adoption of the X565 data standard has reduced loading errors by over 90% in airlines using digital reconciliation systems.
- De-icing oversight: A new industry dashboard and data-sharing pool improve visibility into risks, with growing participation from U.S. and Chinese operators.

In short, IATA is emphasizing standardization, smarter and cleaner equipment, and digital workflows as the three pillars to make ground handling safer, more efficient, and resilient.
