Shifting of Trains to the Upgraded Passenger Reservation System to Begin in August. Transition to New Passenger Reservation System - Starting August 2026, trains will gradually shift from the 40-year-old reservation system (introduced in 1986) to a fully upgraded platform. - Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed officials to ensure a smooth transition without inconvenience to passengers. - Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu also attended the review meeting. RailOne App Integration - Launched in July 2025, the RailOne app has already crossed 3.5 crore downloads. - Features include: - AI-based waitlist confirmation predictions (accuracy improved from 53% to 94%). - Booking, cancellation, and refunds for reserved, unreserved, and platform tickets. - Real-time updates on train schedules, live running status, platform info, coach positions. - Passenger assistance via Rail Madad. - Food ordering delivered directly to seats. - Daily usage: 9.29 lakh tickets booked, including 7.2 lakh unreserved and 2.09 lakh reserved. Passenger Subsidy - In FY 2024–25, Indian Railways provided a subsidy of ₹60,239 crore on passenger tickets. - Equivalent to an average 43% discount for every passenger (if service cost is ₹100, ticket price is ₹57). Significance This overhaul marks the biggest modernization of India’s reservation system in decades, aligning with digital adoption trends (currently 88% of tickets booked online) and ensuring scalability for future passenger demand.
