Lufthansa has put forward a new proposal to Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), the pilots’ union, aimed at resolving the long-running dispute over pension arrangements. The offer centers on converting the transitional pension (ÜV) into the company pension plan (bAV), creating a more integrated system similar to those used by competitors like KLM and British Airways. Integration of pensions: Lufthansa suggests merging the transitional pension into the company pension plan, eliminating the need for a separate scheme. Improved benefits: The company estimates this could enhance the pension plan by up to 50%, without increasing overall costs. Fairness for pilots: The current ÜV lapses for pilots who continue flying until statutory retirement age. The new model would ensure planning certainty and benefits for those colleagues. Precedent in cabin crew: Lufthansa notes it has already taken a similar approach with cabin crew pensions, successfully strengthening their company plan. Negotiation stance: The airline emphasizes openness to VC’s preferred model and a willingness to resume talks. This move appears designed to address union concerns while keeping costs stable, potentially paving the way for a settlement in the pension dispute.
