Since its launch in 2021, Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism attracted more than 1,000 applications from 100 countries. Today, the Network brings together 319 rural destinations worldwide, including more than 230 villages recognized as Best Tourism Villages and 83 taking part in the Upgrade Programme, representing a total of 65 countries across five world regions: Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. Applications Open: UN Tourism has launched the 2026 edition of its flagship initiative, Best Tourism Villages. Deadline: Member States can submit up to eight candidate villages via their National Tourism Administrations (NTAs) by 9 June 2026. Recognition Event: Villages selected as Best Tourism Villages 2026 will be announced in the third quarter of 2026 during a UN Tourism event. Programme Impact - Since 2021, the initiative has attracted 1,000+ applications from 100 countries. - The network now includes 319 rural destinations across 65 countries, with: - 230+ villages recognized as Best Tourism Villages. - 83 villages in the Upgrade Programme (receiving tailored support). Evaluation Criteria Applications are assessed by an independent Advisory Board of global experts based on: - Sustainability (economic, social, environmental). - Governance and community involvement. - Cultural & natural heritage preservation. - Infrastructure and wellbeing. Three Core Pillars 1. Recognition: Honors villages excelling in heritage preservation, sustainability, and community values. 2. Upgrade Programme: Supports villages not yet meeting all criteria with guidance and technical assistance. 3. Network: A collaborative platform for knowledge-sharing, partnerships, and capacity-building across regions. This initiative is part of UN Tourism’s Tourism for Rural Development Programme, designed to harness tourism as a catalyst for rural prosperity, resilience, and well-being, while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
