Air India unveils custom-styled cabin interiors of the first made-for-Air India B787-9

Air India unveiled the custom-styled cabin interiors of its first line-fit (made-for-Air India) Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Bearing registration mark VT-AWA, the new aircraft features completely new cabin interiors, designed especially for Air India and installed directly on Boeing's production line.

Delivered on 11 January 2026, directly from Boeing’s Everett factory, registered as VT-AWA.
Begins commercial service on 1 February 2026 between Mumbai and Frankfurt.
- Part of Vihaan.AI transformation program
This is the first widebody aircraft designed specifically for Air India, marking a milestone in its 5-year transformation plan.

- 38-inch pitch, 7-inch recline

- 13.3-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen
- Enhanced privacy and comfort for long-haul travel

Economy (238 seats, 3-3-3 layout)
- 31–32 inch pitch, 5-inch recline
- 11.6-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen
- Ergonomic lightweight design

Interiors styled to reflect Air India’s revitalised brand identity with soft creams, pinks, reds, golds, and purples.
Inspired by Indian craftsmanship and architecture.

Mood Lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions
Developed with Tata Elxsi, based on chakra philosophy.
Offers 10 custom lighting scenes to align with circadian rhythms and improve passenger wellbeing.

Fleet-Wide Rollout
- 19 more production B787-9s will join with the same interiors.
- 26 existing B787-8s are being retrofitted, with completion expected by mid-2027.

This move positions Air India to compete strongly with global carriers by combining modern luxury, Indian identity, and advanced technology.
