Vietnam is rolling out a major upgrade to its air travel system: starting December 1, 2025, biometric check-in and digital IDs will become mandatory at airports nationwide. Here's what travelers need to know to stay ahead of the curve: What’s Changing? - Biometric Check-In: Face or fingerprint recognition will replace traditional counters for most passengers. - Digital ID via VNeID App: Travelers must use the government’s VNeID app or self-service kiosks to scan their ID and boarding pass. - No Checked Baggage? You’ll complete the entire process digitally—from check-in to security and boarding. - Checked Baggage or Special Cases? You’ll still use staffed counters. Trial Period: Sept 15 – Nov 30, 2025 - Passengers can register biometric data at airports or through the VNeID app. - This phase helps travelers and airlines adapt before the full rollout. Beyond Airports - The same biometric tech will be deployed at urban railway stations, Hanoi Station, and major parking facilities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by year-end. Who’s Behind It? - Led by the Ministry of Public Security, in coordination with other government bodies. - Part of a nationwide digital infrastructure push to improve security and streamline travel. If you're planning a trip to Vietnam after December, it’s smart to download the VNeID app and register early.
