The Government in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has constructed about 57,125 km of National Highways (NHs) during the last five financial years. Key Achievements (Last 5 Years) - Total NHs Constructed: ~57,125 km - Bharatmala Phase-I: - Planned length: 34,800 km - Awarded: 796 projects covering 26,425 km - Constructed: 21,248 km (up to Sept 2025) - State Focus – Karnataka: - 3,187 km of NH projects sanctioned/awarded (including expressways & economic corridors) Growth in NH Network - Overall NH Length: Increased from 1,32,499 km (March 2019) → 1,46,560 km (2025) - 4-Lane & Above NHs: Expanded 1.4× from 31,066 km (2019) → 43,512 km (2025) - Less than 2-Lane NHs: Reduced from 27% (2019) → 9% of total NH network (2025) High-Speed Corridors & Expressways - Operationalized Length: ~3,052 km of access-controlled High-Speed Corridors (HSCs) / Expressways - Impact: - Freight speed improved from 30–35 km/h (on 4-lane NHs) → ~50 km/h (on HSCs) - Enhanced regional connectivity and logistics efficiency - Boosted economic growth through faster transport and reduced costs Significance - The expansion under Bharatmala is not just about adding kilometers — it’s about transforming India’s logistics backbone, reducing travel time, and improving accessibility across regions. - By prioritizing expressways and economic corridors, the government is aligning infrastructure growth with economic development goals.
