The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the revision process for the GSTC Industry Standard for Hotels and Tour Operators, version 3. GSTC Industry Standard Revision The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has successfully completed the fourth revision of its Industry Standard for Hotels and Tour Operators. Key Updates Separation into Two Standards The former unified Industry Standard is now split into: - GSTC Hotel Standard – for hotels and accommodations of all sizes. - GSTC Tour Operator Standard – for tour operators worldwide. Expanded Framework There are now five published GSTC Standards: 1. Destination Standard 2. Hotel Standard 3. Tour Operator Standard 4. MICE Standard (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) 5. Attraction Standard (Food & Beverage Service Provider Standard is in development, expected early 2026). Measurable Indicators New emphasis on quantifiable performance indicators to track sustainability progress effectively. Detailed Guidelines Annexes added to both standards for clearer interpretation of criteria. Purpose & Alignment - The standards serve as minimum requirements for tourism businesses and destinations to protect natural and cultural resources. - They are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), guiding organizations toward holistic sustainability practices. Revision Process - Conducted through public consultations and expert input. - Based on the GSTC Standard Setting Manual v3.0 and aligned with the ISEAL Code. - Ensures clarity, applicability, and continuous improvement. Significance This revision strengthens GSTC’s mission to balance environmental integrity, cultural respect, and economic viability in tourism, while making the standards more practical and globally relevant.
