Here are the key details from the official release: Context - Nalanda, in Bihar, is one of India’s most iconic Buddhist heritage sites, historically home to the ancient Nalanda University. - Development is being pursued under multiple central sector schemes to enhance infrastructure, visitor facilities, and global branding. Proposal Highlights - Union Budget 2024–25: Nalanda was identified as a key pilgrimage site for development. - State Government Role: Bihar was asked to submit a Destination Strategy and Development Plan for Nalanda. - Central Support: The Ministry of Tourism complements state efforts through schemes like: - Swadesh Darshan (SD & SD 2.0): Focused on thematic circuits and immersive experiences. - Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD): Competitive project funding for innovative tourism ideas. - PRASHAD Scheme: Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation. - SASCI Scheme: Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, targeting iconic tourist centres. Funding & Projects - Under SASCI (2024–25), 40 projects in 23 states worth ₹3,295.76 crore were sanctioned, including Bihar. - Bihar projects include: - Bodh Gaya Buddhist Meditation & Experience Centre (₹165.44 crore). - Tourist facilities at Sonepur Mela Ground, Saran (₹24.29 crore). - Matsyagandha Lake development in Saharsa (₹97.61 crore). - Karamchat Eco-Tourism & Adventure Hub (₹49.51 crore). - Ambika Bhawani Temple development, Saran (₹13.29 crore).
