IATA-ICAO Deepen Cooperation on Boosting Sustainable Aviation Fuels

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced enhanced cooperation at ICAO Aviation Climate Week today to advance transparency and integrity in tracking progress and accelerating the development and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

Partnership Strengthened:
IATA and ICAO announced deeper collaboration during ICAO Aviation Climate Week to accelerate the development and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

Transparency & Integrity:
The focus is on building robust systems and high‑quality data to ensure credible tracking of cleaner aviation energies and their contribution to net‑zero carbon emissions by 2050.

SAF Registries:
Both organizations will explore how SAF registries and their data can support ICAO’s Long‑Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) Monitoring and Reporting methodology, including fuel accounting systems for international aviation.

Industry Voices:
- Willie Walsh (IATA Director General) emphasized that credible tracking of SAF emissions reductions is essential to accelerate deployment and build trust.
- Juan Carlos Salazar (ICAO Secretary General) highlighted that transparency and cooperation are critical for scaling SAF and ensuring climate investments are consistently recognized.

Global Impact:
The agreement aims to improve monitoring of SAF production, distribution, and use, strengthening ICAO’s leadership in guiding states and industry toward net‑zero aviation.

Context:
- IATA represents over 370 airlines, accounting for ~85% of global air traffic.
- ICAO, a UN specialized agency, works with 193 member states to set aviation standards and policies, with a vision of net‑zero carbon emissions by 2050.
