Purpose of the MoU - Signed between National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) in Oslo. - Aims to strengthen India’s highway infrastructure with global geotechnical expertise. - Focus areas: tunnel engineering, slope stability, hazard mitigation, and institutional capacity building. Scope of Collaboration - Tunnel projects: site characterization, feasibility studies, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). - Safety audits: structural assessment of operational tunnels. - Slope stability: advanced hazard identification, mitigation measures, and monitoring using InSAR data. - Early warning systems: to improve infrastructure safety. Knowledge Exchange - Joint workshops, seminars, technical training programs. - Publication of specialized technical literature. - Research & development initiatives on natural hazard reduction. Terms - Valid for five years. - Non-exclusive arrangement: both parties can collaborate with other organizations on a project-to-project basis. Significance - Enhances India’s ability to build safe, sustainable, world-class highways in geologically sensitive terrains. - Strengthens India–Norway cooperation in infrastructure development, technology exchange, and sustainable engineering practices. This partnership is particularly important for India’s upcoming tunnel-heavy projects in the Himalayas and other challenging terrains, where slope stability and hazard mitigation are critical.
