In a further confirmation of its commitment to using sustainable aviation fuels, SWISS has concluded a new collaboration with the Swiss-based Metafuels SAF technology company. Partnership Goals - SWISS + Metafuels are collaborating to accelerate the development and scaling of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). - The aim is to secure long-term access to synthetic fuels and support Switzerland’s role as an innovation hub. Technology - Metafuels’ “aerobrew” process converts green methanol (from renewable energy, water, and CO₂) into SAF. - Flexible feedstocks: biomethanol or e-methanol. - Compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. Current Projects - Demonstration plant at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Villigen, Switzerland). - First commercial SAF plant under development in Rotterdam. Strategic Importance - SAF is seen as a key lever for decarbonization in aviation. - SWISS and Lufthansa Group are preparing for EU and Swiss synthetic fuel quotas from 2030. - Partnership ensures early access to SAF, helping SWISS meet regulatory and sustainability targets. Leadership Voices - Jens Fehlinger (SWISS CEO): stressed the need for industrial-scale SAF production at affordable prices. - Saurabh Kapoor (Metafuels CEO): highlighted the milestone of securing SWISS as their first airline partner and Switzerland’s role in advancing synthetic fuels. This collaboration positions SWISS as a front-runner in synthetic SAF adoption, complementing its investments in fuel-efficient aircraft and broader Lufthansa Group initiatives.
