The MSC Foundation is celebrating one year of impact in The Bahamas since opening its Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay in April 2025. Coral Restoration: - Over 600 corals grown in the underwater nursery. - More than 250 successfully outplanted onto surrounding reefs, showing resilience during peak summer heat. - Partnership with the Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) expanded coral species diversity, contributing to the Bahamas Coral Gene Bank. Marine Science & Education: - Collaboration with the University of The Bahamas to establish a marine science lab. - Six graduate internships with U.S. universities and 12 field visits. - Week-long immersive courses for Bahamian students, training 16 participants in coral propagation and reef monitoring. Public Engagement: - More than 17,000 visitors engaged in ocean education at Ocean Cay. - Community initiatives in Bimini, including beach cleanups with 120 participants and a high school agricultural program reaching 80 students. Sustainability Commitment: - Focus on aligning conservation with national development priorities and nature-based tourism. - Long-term goal: build local capacity and position The Bahamas as a leader in marine conservation. As MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco put it, the aim is to “translate this momentum into measurable, long-term impact” by deepening partnerships and investing in local communities.
