The GSTC2026 Global Sustainable Tourism Conference in Phuket was a major milestone, drawing 575 delegates from more than 55 countries to discuss practical solutions for advancing sustainable tourism. Themes: Sustainable Hospitality, Resilient Cities & Communities, and Visitor Distribution Management framed the program. Pre-conference trainings (Apr 19–20): Courses on sustainable tourism, MICE, attractions, and auditor training for GSTC standards. Academic Symposium (Apr 21): Researchers and practitioners exchanged insights on sustainability challenges. Opening remarks: GSTC Chair Luigi Cabrini emphasized tourism’s role as a “creator of jobs and a tool for development,” while noting that peace is essential for tourism to thrive. He outlined GSTC’s ambition to act as a global convening authority for sustainable tourism. Sessions: Covered climate resilience, hotel waste management, accessibility, slow travel, and sustainable procurement. Local integration: The event showcased Thai culture with performances, locally sourced food, and community-based tours exploring marine livelihoods, heritage, and human–wildlife coexistence. Carbon footprint offset: One tree planted per attendee through collaboration with Reforest, plus eco-friendly measures like reusable lanyards, electric shuttles, and digital-first communications. Looking Ahead At the farewell dinner, GSTC CEO Randy Durband announced that GSTC2027 will be hosted in The Bahamas (May 18–21, 2027), bringing a Small Island Developing State perspective to the global sustainability dialogue.
