Ibex Expeditions Private Ltd. has launched a global advocacy campaign, #AntarcticaMatters, to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect Antarctica—one of the planet’s most fragile and vital ecosystems. Campaign Overview - Initiated: 2017 during Ibex Expeditions’ first journey to Antarctica. - Latest Expedition: February 2026, with 69 members aboard the Ocean Explorer (Quark Expeditions). - Leaders: Mandip Singh Soin (FRGS) and Anita Soin. - Goal: Raise global awareness about protecting Antarctica under the Antarctic Treaty System, which prohibits mining and commercial exploitation. Why Antarctica Matters - Climate Regulation: Antarctica plays a critical role in stabilizing Earth’s climate. - Risks if disturbed: Rising sea levels, disrupted weather systems, and long-term climate instability. - Symbol of Human Endurance: Historic feats like Shackleton’s survival journey and the Scott-Amundsen race to the South Pole highlight its legacy. Treaty Urgency - The Antarctic Treaty System is due for review in 2048. - The campaign calls on governments, civil society, travellers, and global organisations to advocate for continued protection. Collective Action - Supported by major organisations: ATTA, PATA, WTTC II, SKAL International, UIAA, RTSOI, Inlaks Foundation, St. Stephen’s College, MakeMyTrip, CEEW, Nanhi Chhaan Foundation, among others. - Product partners: Juicy Chemistry and Patagonia. - Legal support: Luthra and Luthra Law Offices India and AZB & Partners (pro bono). Responsible Tourism in Action - All 2026 expedition participants took a Polar Pledge to: - Advocate for Antarctica’s protection. - Promote awareness in their communities. - Support long-term conservation efforts. This campaign positions responsible travel as a powerful tool for global advocacy, linking adventure with environmental stewardship.
