Songkran festival 2026 to proceed nationwide, welcoming global visitors to Thailand’s UNESCO-recognised New Year celebration

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has confirmed that the Songkran Festival 2026 will proceed nationwide, ensuring visitors from around the world can experience Thailand’s UNESCO-recognised New Year celebration.

Festival Overview
- Dates: April 9–15, 2026 (extended celebrations in Bangkok and other regions).
- Nationwide Events: Water festivities, temple rituals, cultural parades, and community gatherings across all regions.
- UNESCO Recognition: Songkran is now inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its cultural significance.

Key Highlights by Region
- Bangkok: Maha Songkran World Event at Benjakitti Park, riverside celebrations at ICONSIAM and Asiatique, plus music festivals like S2O and Siam Songkran. Silom and Siam Square will again become major water zones.
- Central Region: Ayutthaya’s temple-based celebrations and the famous elephant water-splashing event.
- North: Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, and Nan with extended, tradition-rich ceremonies.
- East: Chon Buri’s Wan Lai custom, stretching festivities beyond the main dates.
- Northeast: Khon Kaen and Udon Thani blending cultural rituals with urban energy.
- South: Beachside Songkran in Phuket, Surat Thani, and Chumphon.

TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool reassured travelers:
> “We are aware that global events have created uncertainty for travellers. We want to be clear: Songkran 2026 will take place as planned across every region of Thailand. The spirit of this festival and Thailand’s welcome remains unchanged.”
