The Region of Istria (Croatia) has joined as a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Destination Profile: Istria is a heart‑shaped peninsula in the Adriatic, known for its coastal towns, vineyards, olive groves, truffle forests, and medieval villages. Sustainability Vision: The region aims to become a leading Mediterranean destination for sustainable tourism, guided by master plans (2004–2012, 2015–2025, and a new 2026–2035 plan in development). Revitalization Success: Once abandoned rural areas have been revived — over 200 villages restored, agriculture booming again, with 120 winemakers, 120 olive oil producers, and many family‑run agritourism businesses. Balanced Tourism: Emphasis on both the “blue” coastal tourism and the “green” inland tourism, ensuring residents enjoy high quality of life alongside visitors. Governance & Collaboration: Strong cooperation between public and private sectors, aligning with EU sustainability frameworks and climate goals. Leadership Statement: Boris Miletić, President of the Region of Istria, emphasized that success is measured not just in numbers but in resident satisfaction and meaningful guest experiences. GSTC Welcome: Randy Durband, GSTC CEO, highlighted Istria’s role in advancing sustainable tourism practices on the scenic peninsula. This move positions Istria as a model for how regional governance can integrate sustainability principles into tourism development while preserving cultural heritage and natural landscapes.
