Guwahati Terminal Expansion Strengthens Assam Connectivity, Lifts Capacity to 13.1 Million

The new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati has officially begun operations, boosting annual passenger capacity to 13.1 million. This expansion strengthens Assam’s connectivity and positions Guwahati as the key aviation hub for India’s North-East, linking it more effectively with mainland India and Southeast Asia.

Capacity & Routes:
Now capable of handling 13.1 million passengers annually, with 21 domestic and 3 international routes (Bangkok, Paro, Singapore).

Operational Readiness:
Transition included phased trials across check-in, baggage, security, and aircraft turnaround before full deployment.

Inauguration:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the terminal in December 2025; Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani attended the operational launch.

Cultural Integration:
Design inspired by Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and bamboo traditions, incorporating over 140 metric tonnes of bamboo.

Recognition:
The architecture won the International Architecture Award 2025 for blending regional identity with modern infrastructure.

Assam CM emphasized that the project will be a “gamechanger” for tourism and regional growth, aligning with Adani Group’s ₹50,000 crore investment commitment in the state.
