This holiday season, as families gather and temperatures drop, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) would like to remind everyone of simple steps to take to avoid preventable injuries. Toy Safety - Choose toys appropriate for the child’s age and developmental stage. - Avoid small parts, magnets, and button batteries (choking and ingestion hazards). - Watch out for long strings or cords (strangulation risks). - Always inspect toys, read instructions, and supervise play. Decorating Safely - Thousands are injured each year while putting up decorations. - Use the right size ladder on stable ground. - Have another person spot you when climbing or reaching. Cold Weather Protection - Limit time outdoors in extreme cold. - Dress warmly, covering hands, feet, and face. - Prevent frostbite and hypothermia with proper clothing and precautions. Heating & Carbon Monoxide - Ensure proper ventilation when using space heaters, fireplaces, or generators. - Follow safety guidelines to prevent fires. - Use carbon monoxide detectors—exposure is odorless but can be fatal. Slips, Falls & Snow Safety - Keep walkways clear of ice and snow. - Be cautious when shoveling—linked to thousands of injuries and ~100 deaths annually (mostly heart attacks). - Never clear snowblower blockages with your hands, even when powered off. Travel Safety - Winter roads can become icy quickly; storms reduce visibility. - Carry a charged phone, warm clothing, blankets, water, and a basic emergency kit in your car. These tips emphasize prevention and preparedness, helping families avoid common holiday emergencies and enjoy the season safely.
