The International Air Transport Association (IATA) marked the tenth anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) assembly resolution to establish the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) with a call to governments to reinforce the foundations of this landmark step in aviation's decarbonization.
CORSIA at 10 Years
- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) marked the 10th anniversary of ICAO's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
- More than 130 countries participate in the scheme.
- By the end of 2026, CORSIA is expected to have mitigated around 200 million tonnes of CO₂.
IATA's Message
- Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, described CORSIA as a landmark global climate agreement for aviation.
- She emphasized the need for broad participation, consistent implementation, and continued government support.
EU ETS Concerns
- The anniversary coincides with the European Union's review of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
- IATA warned that expanding the EU ETS could create overlapping carbon-pricing systems and increase airline compliance costs.
IATA's Recommendations
Strengthen CORSIA
- Ensure full global implementation of CORSIA.
- Avoid extending the EU ETS beyond its current scope.
Boost Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
- Increase support for SAF production.
- Remove restrictions that limit sustainable fuel pathways.
Support Competitiveness
- Use aviation-generated ETS revenues to fund:
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel production
- Aviation infrastructure
- Emerging aviation technologies
Key Takeaway
IATA wants governments to reinforce CORSIA as the primary global framework for aviation emissions while accelerating investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel and clean aviation technologies.
