America's Newest Capital Gateway Unveiled: More Than $20 Billion Transformation at Washington Dulles International Airport

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, United Airlines and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced a landmark transformation for Washington Dulles International Airport with a capital investment program of more than $20 billion.

Scope of the Project
- Scale: More than 5 million square feet of new or renovated space.
- Main Terminal: Preserves Eero Saarinen’s iconic design while adding walkable access to gates and a new U.S. Customs facility.
- Concourse Replacement: The aging C/D Concourse will be replaced with modern facilities capable of handling larger aircraft and more destinations.
- Mobility Upgrades: Expansion of the AeroTrain and a central walking tunnel will retire the famous—but outdated—mobile lounges.

Traveler Experience Enhancements
- Streamlined entry, close-in parking, and faster security screening.
- Spacious seating, work areas, and amenities at new gates.
- Improved baggage handling for quicker luggage delivery.
- Expanded concessions, United Club lounges, and one of the world’s largest Polaris lounges.

Financing & Impact
- Funded largely through municipal bonds, offering lower interest rates than private financing.
- Builds on United Airlines’ long-term investment in its Dulles hub.
- Expected to generate jobs, attract business investment, and strengthen Virginia’s role as a global hub.

Timeline
- Construction will roll out in phases over the next decade while the airport remains operational.
- First milestone: Concourse E, opening later this year with 14 new United gates and direct AeroTrain access.

This project is being framed as a national showcase airport, intended to reflect the importance of Washington, D.C. as the capital and to set a new standard for U.S. airports.
