Indian Railways is undergoing a major modernization drive

Indian Railways (IR) is undergoing a major modernization drive, with several new train systems and technologies being rolled out.

Vande Bharat (Chair Car):
162 services now operational, with 81 pairs listed across India.
- Features: jerk-free couplers, KAVACH safety system, automatic plug doors, crash-hardened memory, UV-C air disinfection, CCTVs, and Divyangjan-friendly lavatories.

Vande Bharat (Sleeper):
Introduced in 2026 for long-distance travel.
- First service: Howrah–Kamakhya Sleeper Express (Jan 2026).
- Features: crashworthy design, regenerative braking, fire barrier doors, ergonomically designed ladders for upper berths.

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail:
Short-distance inter-city commuter trains.
- Currently 2 pairs: Jaynagar–Patna and Ahmedabad–Bhuj.

Amrit Bharat Express:
Affordable, non-AC modern trains for low/middle-income families.
- 36 pairs in operation, with improved safety, aesthetics, EP braking, USB charging, and Divyangjan coaches.

Hydrogen Train – NaMo Green Rail:
Launched July 2026.
- World’s longest (10 coaches) and most powerful (2400 kW) hydrogen train-set on broad gauge.
- Zero CO₂ emissions, only water vapor.

Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR):
508 km project with 12 stations.
- Land acquisition (1389.5 ha) and utility shifting completed.
- Delays in Maharashtra until 2021, but progress picked up in 2022.

Strategic Impact
- These initiatives reflect IR’s push for:
- Passenger comfort & safety (KAVACH, fire suppression, crashworthy designs).
