The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) has announced the rollout of a Certification Trademark (hologram) for Indian single malt whiskies, marking a significant step towards standardising authenticity and quality in a rapidly expanding category. Major Industry Milestone: The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) has announced the rollout of a Certification Trademark (hologram) for Indian single malt whiskies. Authenticity & Quality: The hologram will serve as a visible assurance of authenticity, granted only to manufacturers meeting IMWA’s strict production standards. Defined Standards: To qualify, whiskies must: - Use 100% malted barley (no molasses or neutral spirits). - Be produced at a single distillery in India. - Undergo copper pot still distillation. - Mature for a minimum of three years in oak casks (≤700 litres). - Complete all processes — mashing, distillation, maturation, bottling — within India, with no external flavouring agents. Leadership Statement: Maj Gen (Dr) Rajesh Chopra, AVSM (Retd), Director General, IMWA, said: “The certification mark is not just about compliance but about establishing a shared baseline of authenticity and process integrity. It aims to bring clarity in a fragmented market, reinforce consumer trust, and ensure growth is built on verifiable standards.” Consumer Confidence: The certification addresses concerns around product authenticity, enabling informed purchasing decisions and reinforcing quality benchmarks. Global Positioning: Aligns Indian single malt production with international expectations, supporting export readiness and enhancing credibility in premium whisky markets worldwide. Category Growth: As Indian single malts gain global traction, the certification framework creates a structured, transparent, and competitive ecosystem. About IMWA - Established in July 2024 as a not-for-profit industry body. - Represents leading Indian malt whisky producers. - Mandate: protect, preserve, and promote the integrity of the category. - Focuses on globally aligned standards, advocacy, certification, and intellectual property. - Aims to position India as a serious premium player in the global whisky landscape.
