As the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) actively expands National Highways, its focus is not just on faster connectivity but equally on bringing safety standards to a global level. Safety Vision - The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is expanding national highways with a dual focus: faster connectivity and global-level safety standards. - Infrastructure development is being redefined to prioritize life protection alongside speed and efficiency. Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) - What they are: Impact-absorbing safety devices mounted on trucks, designed to protect both workers and road users. - How they work: In case of a collision, TMAs absorb and dissipate kinetic energy, reducing the force of impact. - Benefits: - Safeguard maintenance crews working ahead of vehicles. - Reduce injury risks for drivers of colliding vehicles. - Minimize accident severity in highway work zones. Early Warning Systems - TMAs deployed with wig-wag warning lights that flash in alternating patterns to form directional arrows. - These signals alert drivers in advance, especially useful on: - High-speed corridors - Night-time operations - Foggy or low-visibility conditions Deployment Figures - 33 TMAs and 15 Towable TMAs (TTMAs) deployed across 9 highway projects in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. - All units meet MASH Test Level-3 (TL-3) and NCHRP 350 Test Level-3 standards. - Designed to withstand impacts at speeds up to 100 km/h. Big Picture This initiative shows MoRTH’s commitment to global best practices in highway safety. As India’s highways expand, TMAs act as an invisible shield, ensuring safer journeys, protecting workers, and saving lives.
