The Government of India has announced the full implementation of digital‑only toll collection at all National Highway fee plazas. Digital‑Only Mode: Cash transactions at toll plazas have been phased out; payments will now be exclusively through FASTag and other approved electronic methods. Coverage: Applies to all National Highway fee plazas across the country. Objective: - Reduce congestion and waiting times at toll booths. - Enhance transparency and efficiency in toll collection. - Support the government’s broader push for digital payments and smart mobility. Impact: - Faster vehicle movement, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions. - Improved revenue collection and reduced leakages. - Greater convenience for commuters, especially frequent highway users. This move builds on the success of FASTag adoption, which already accounts for the majority of toll payments nationwide. By going fully digital, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aims to make highway travel smoother, greener, and more future‑ready. However, this transition has not been implemented in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and West Bengal, as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry, in view of the Model Code of Conduct currently in force due to ongoing electoral process.
