IndiGo, Digi Yatra and Bangalore Airport Successfully Conduct Technical Trials of Contactless International Travel Project with IATA

IndiGo, India’s preferred airline, in partnership with Digi Yatra Foundation, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), and International Air Transport Association (IATA), successfully demonstrated integrated international travel flow from ticketing, managing bookings to seamless, biometric-enabled journey in technical trials at the Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport).

Project Overview
- Partners: IndiGo, Digi Yatra Foundation, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), and IATA.
- Objective: Demonstrate a fully integrated, contactless international travel flow — from ticketing and booking to biometric-enabled airport journey.
- Location: Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR).
- Context: Part of IATA’s global Proof-of-Concept campaign for international contactless travel.

Key Innovations
- Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI): Secure digital identity ecosystem enabling passengers to control their data.
- Biometric processing: Seamless verification using facial recognition across airport touchpoints.
- App-to-app integration: Boarding passes shared directly between IndiGo and Digi Yatra apps.
- Global standards: Aligned with IATA’s One ID framework for interoperability across international travel ecosystems.

Leadership Insights
- IndiGo (Neetan Chopra): Trials prove scalability of digital identity and biometrics for seamless travel.
- IATA (Kim Macaulay): India is emerging as a global leader in digital travel innovation.
- BIAL (George Fanthome): Trials align with BLR’s vision of biometric-led, contactless travel at scale.
- Digi Yatra (Suresh Khadakbhavi): Demonstration shows privacy-first, consent-led framework with global interoperability.

Significance
- Positions India as a pioneer in digital and contactless international travel.
- Reinforces BLR Airport’s role as the only Indian airport participating in IATA’s global initiative.
- Sets the stage for full-scale deployment of biometric-enabled, seamless international journeys.

This trial is a major step toward redefining passenger experience, combining security, convenience, and global interoperability.
