The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking a major leap in technology-driven road management with the rollout of AI-Powered Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS) across 40,000 km of the National Highway network. Dashcams on Patrol Vehicles: Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) will be fitted with specialized cameras to conduct weekly surveys of highway stretches. AI/ML Models: Trained to automatically detect 30+ types of defects and anomalies, including: - Pavement issues: potholes, rutting, severe cracking. - Road furniture: faded lane markings, damaged crash barriers, non-functional streetlights. - Safety concerns: illegal median openings, unauthorized signboards, encroachments, and illegal parking. Night Surveys: At least one survey per month will be conducted at night to evaluate signage, road studs, pavement markings, and lighting. Broader Coverage - Monitoring also includes water stagnation, missing drainage covers, vegetation growth, and bus bay conditions. - Data will be processed through a specialized IT platform with interactive dashboards, enabling side-by-side comparisons of road conditions over time. - Results will feed into the central NHAI Data Lake, ensuring seamless monitoring and timely rectification. Impact - Timely Maintenance: Faster identification of defects means quicker repairs. - Enhanced Safety: Proactive detection of hazards reduces accident risks. - Efficiency: Data-driven insights improve resource allocation and long-term planning. - User Experience: Safer, smoother highways for millions of travelers. This initiative reflects India’s push toward smart infrastructure under Viksit Bharat 2047, where highways are not just expanded but intelligently managed for safety and sustainability.
