AirAsia set to boost trade and tourism in Batam, enhancing regional connectivity between Malaysia and Indonesia

AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK) is set to boost trade and tourism in the Riau Islands Province with the launch of its new daily service from Kuala Lumpur to Batam, commencing 13 March 2026.

New Service:
Daily flights between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Batam (BTH) starting 13 March 2026.

Objective:
Strengthen trade and tourism links between Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly the Riau Islands Province.

Market Context:
- Malaysia is Batam’s largest source market, contributing over 25% of foreign tourist arrivals (Jan–Aug 2025).
- Batam saw 140,000 international arrivals in 2025, a 64% increase from 2024.

Projected Impact:
- AirAsia expects 22,000+ passengers on the route within the first three months.
- Expands AirAsia’s Malaysia–Indonesia network to 19 routes.
- In 2025, AirAsia carried nearly 3 million guests between the two countries.
