In November 2025, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with QueerVadis to strengthen LGBTQ+ inclusion within the framework of sustainable tourism. Purpose of the MoU - Promote LGBTQ+ inclusion as a core part of social sustainability. - Encourage equitable, diverse, and inclusive tourism practices worldwide. Nature of Collaboration - Non-commercial partnership focused on knowledge exchange and sectoral awareness. - Joint initiatives such as webinars, panel discussions, case studies, and training. - Potential development of guidance materials on inclusive tourism. Clarifications - The MoU does not imply endorsement or equivalency between GSTC Standards and the QueerVadis Certification Protocol. - It is about collaboration, not accreditation. About QueerVadis - Runs the QueerVadis Certification Protocol, the first international program certifying LGBTQ+ traveler-friendly hospitality. - Founded by Sonders & Beach, with CEO Alessio Virgili, also President of the European LGBTQ+ Travel Alliance (ELTA). - Organizers of LGBTQ+ tourism events like IGLTA convention in Italy and Expo Turismo Gay. About GSTC - Independent non-profit managing global sustainable tourism standards (for destinations, hotels, tour operators, events, attractions). - Provides accreditation to certification bodies, ensuring sustainable practices in tourism. - Represents a diverse membership including governments, travel companies, NGOs, and communities. This MoU is significant because it integrates diversity and inclusion into the sustainability agenda, ensuring tourism is not only environmentally responsible but also socially equitable.
