Hanle Dark Sky Reserve Star Party 2025: A Celestial Celebration in Ladakh

The third edition of the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR) Star Party, held from September 18–23, 2025, was a breathtaking convergence of science, culture, and community. Set in the pristine skies of Hanle, Ladakh, this event drew astronomy enthusiasts from across India—from Tamil Nadu to Jammu & Kashmir—for a shared experience under one of the darkest skies on Earth.

Highlights from the Star Party
- Organizers: Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Department of Wildlife Protection (UT Ladakh), and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
- Location: Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle—at an altitude of 4,250 meters, offering Bortle-1 skies (the darkest classification).
- Participants: A mix of expert astrophotographers and curious newcomers, all self-funded, gathered for four nights of stargazing and learning.

Activities & Experiences
- Masterclasses: On astrophotography, celestial navigation, and visual observing.
- “7 Wonders of the HDSR Night Sky”: A curated guide by Ajay & Neelam Talwar showcasing rare celestial sights.
- Deep Sky Imaging: Nebulae, galaxies, and the Milky Way captured in stunning detail.
- Open Night: Over 300 locals, tourists, and army personnel joined to view celestial objects through telescopes.

Astro-Tourism & Community Impact
- 24 Astronomy Ambassadors: Trained locals who guide visitors and operate telescopes—60% of them are women, marking a strong push for inclusive science outreach.
- Reverse Migration: Locals returning to Hanle, drawn by new opportunities in astro-tourism and cultural revival.
- Ethnoastronomy: Folk songs and traditional stories enriched the experience, connecting sky science with heritage.

Safety & Support
- Due to the high altitude and dry climate, daily medical checks were conducted to ensure participant well-being.

This star party wasn’t just about looking up—it was about looking inward, connecting with nature, culture, and community. Hanle continues to shine as India’s beacon for sustainable astro-tourism and scientific wonder.
