In view of the rapid sustained growth in demand for travel, the capacity of major cities to originate new trains needs to be doubled from the current level in the next 5 years. Strategic Goal - Objective: Double the originating train capacity in 48 major cities within the next 5 years, with full completion targeted by 2030. - Reason: Rapid growth in passenger demand and congestion at existing terminals. Key Measures 1. Terminal Expansion - Add platforms, stabling lines, pit lines, and shunting facilities at current coaching terminals. 2. New Terminals - Identify and build additional terminals in and around urban areas. 3. Maintenance Facilities - Establish mega coaching complexes for upkeep of increased train volumes. 4. Sectional Capacity Upgrades - Traffic facility works, signaling modernization, and multitracking to handle higher train frequency. 5. Balanced Capacity Planning - Expansion not just at central stations but also satellite stations (e.g., Pune’s Hadapsar, Khadki, Alandi). Implementation Timeline - Immediate & Short-Term: Progressive capacity increases over the next 5 years. - Long-Term (by 2030): Complete doubling of originating capacity across all targeted cities. Impact - Passenger Benefits: Reduced congestion, smoother travel, better connectivity nationwide. - Operational Efficiency: Enhanced handling capacity at stations and yards. - Urban Integration: Balanced development across suburban and non-suburban traffic segments. Official Statement Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw: “We’re expanding coaching terminals, enhancing sectional and operational capacities in various cities to meet rising passenger demand and reduce congestion. This move will upgrade our railway network and improve nationwide connectivity.”
