Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), which is Switzerland’s premium air carrier, and Kuehne+Nagel, which is one of the world’s leading logistics service providers, are to deepen their strategic partnership to make air transportation more sustainable. Partnership Focus: - Promote the development and commercialization of synthetic aviation fuels (SAF) manufactured by Swiss clean-tech company Synhelion. - Joint commitment to long-term procurement of SAF, giving Synhelion a stable foundation to scale production. Commitments: - SWISS will procure at least 200 tonnes of Synhelion SAF annually starting in 2027. - A portion of this fuel will be resold to Kuehne+Nagel, enabling its airfreight customers to reduce their carbon footprint. - Kuehne+Nagel will use Synhelion’s SAF for airfreight transports with Swiss WorldCargo for a five-year period. Strategic Importance: - SAF is currently expensive and limited in supply. - This partnership accelerates scaling and economic viability of synthetic fuels. - It aligns with aviation industry climate targets and supports decarbonization of logistics. Broader Impact - SWISS continues to invest in fuel-efficient aircraft and sustainable practices within the Lufthansa Group. - Kuehne+Nagel strengthens its leadership in green logistics by offering customers innovative ways to cut emissions. - Together, they set a precedent for cross-industry collaboration between airlines and logistics providers to tackle climate challenges. This is a major step forward in making aviation greener, showing how partnerships can drive innovation and sustainability in sectors traditionally seen as high-carbon.
