The Development of Iconic Tourist Sites is a flagship initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, aimed at transforming selected destinations into world-class tourism hubs with global branding and infrastructure. Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) - In FY 2024–25, the Government sanctioned 40 projects across 23 States worth ₹3,295.76 crore, including projects in Punjab. - Objective: Comprehensive development of iconic tourist centres and marketing them at a global scale. - Projects are implemented by respective State Governments/UT Administrations, with funds released by the Department of Expenditure. Other Central Sector Schemes Supporting Iconic Sites - Swadesh Darshan (SD): 76 projects sanctioned worth ₹5,290.33 crore. - Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0): 53 projects sanctioned worth ₹2,208.27 crore. - Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD): 36 projects sanctioned worth ₹648.11 crore. - PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive): 54 projects sanctioned worth ₹1,726.74 crore. Focus Areas - Infrastructure upgrades: roads, amenities, visitor centres. - Heritage conservation and spiritual tourism. - Branding and marketing at international platforms. - Synergy with state proposals and scheme guidelines. Significance This initiative is designed to: - Position India’s iconic destinations (heritage, cultural, spiritual, and natural) on the global tourism map. - Enhance visitor experience through modern facilities while preserving authenticity. - Drive economic growth and employment in local communities.
