As part of its continued efforts to improve cleanliness and maintenance of toilet facilities along National Highways, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a stricter monitoring and enforcement mechanism.
Enhanced Monitoring Framework
- NHAI has introduced a stricter monitoring and enforcement mechanism to improve the cleanliness and maintenance of toilets and facilities at National Highway toll plazas.
- The initiative also covers toll booths, surrounding areas, and signboards.
Regular Inspections
- NHAI officials will conduct inspections at least once every week.
- Agencies responsible for maintenance must rectify identified deficiencies within a specified timeframe.
Digital Tracking and Transparency
- Show-cause notices and dated photographs of deficiencies will be uploaded to NHAI’s Data Lake portal.
- Agencies must submit responses and evidence of corrective action through the platform.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
- Agencies failing to meet prescribed service standards will face contractual penalties.
- Repeated non-compliance may result in agencies being classified as non-performers.
Restriction on Defaulting Agencies
- Agencies with unresolved deficiencies at 10% or more of their toll plazas will be barred from participating in NHAI bids for 15 days or until all issues are resolved.
‘Clean Toilet Picture Challenge’
- Through the Rajmargyatra App, highway users can report unclean toilets by uploading geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs.
- Eligible reports are rewarded with ₹1,000 FASTag recharge.
Citizen-Centric Approach
The initiative combines:
- Public participation
- Regular inspections
- Digital documentation
- Time-bound corrective action
The goal is to ensure cleaner facilities, stronger accountability, and an improved travel experience for National Highway users.
Key Takeaway
NHAI is strengthening oversight of toll plaza facilities through stricter inspections, penalties, and citizen participation, with a focus on maintaining clean and user-friendly toilet facilities across National Highways.
