CMRL Casts Final Pier for Phase-2 Corridor-5 (ECV-03), Marking a Landmark Moment for Chennai Metro
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has reached a landmark milestone with the casting of the final pier (P814) for Phase-2 Corridor-5 (ECV-03), marking a major step forward in the city’s expanding metro network.
Corridor Stretch:
11.3 km package from Ullagaram Metro Station to Elcot Metro Station.
Final Pier:
Pier P814, 25 metres tall, located near Medavakkam-1 Metro Station.
Scale of Work:
- 513 piers tested on 2,351 piles.
- Tallest piers reach ~29 metres, crossing over the Medavakkam Flyover.
- Includes a 57-metre steel girder span built along a sharp 125m radius curve.
Complex Engineering:
Elevated Medavakkam-1 and Medavakkam-2 stations at ~29m above road level, requiring precision construction in dense, high-traffic market areas.
Execution:
Challenges like traffic diversions and construction above existing flyovers were overcome through meticulous planning and coordination.
Leadership Presence
Senior officials from CMRL, AEON Consortium, and HCC-KEC Consortium were present to mark the occasion, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this achievement.
Next Steps
With all piers complete, the project now advances to:
- Balance U-girder erection
- Station building construction
Both are progressing toward the timely completion of Chennai Metro Phase-2.
