India’s first hydrogen-powered train, is about to begin trials on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana: Route & Launch - Route: Jind → Sonipat (Haryana) - Distance: 90 km - Trial Date: Scheduled for January 26, 2026 - Configuration: 2 Driver Power Cars (DPCs) + 8 passenger carriages during trial Speed & Fuel Efficiency - Top Speed: 150 km/h - Fuel Conversion: 9 kg of water → 900 g hydrogen → powers train for 1 km - Capacity: - Hydrogen: 3,000 kg - Oxygen: 7,680 kg Infrastructure - Hydrogen Plant: India’s largest, located in Jind (built with Spanish collaboration) - Power Supply: 1.5 MW to ensure constant fuel output - Coach Production: Integral Coach Factory, Chennai Technical Features - Dual Power DPCs: Each with 1,200 HP motor engine - Fuel Cells Output: 3,750 ampere DC current - Onboard Facilities: AC, lighting, fans powered by hydrogen energy - Smart Design: Automatic doors, digital passenger displays Significance - Marks India’s entry into the global hydrogen rail revolution (joining Germany, Japan, France, China, etc.) - Seen as a benchmark for eco-friendly transport and a model for future infrastructure projects.
