India has taken a major leap in polar logistics with a direct air cargo mission to Antarctica, flagged off from Manohar International Airport in Mopa, North Goa. Spearheaded by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), this mission marks a significant milestone in streamlining support for India’s Antarctic research stations. Key Highlights: - Cargo Details: 18 tons of essential supplies—including scientific equipment, medicines, and annual provisions—were loaded onto a DROMLAN-operated IL-76 aircraft. - Destination: The cargo is routed via Cape Town, South Africa, en route to Indian research stations like Bharati and Maitri. - Purpose: Supports ongoing research in glaciology, oceanography, and climate studies. - Leadership: The mission was flagged off by Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director of NCPOR, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. - Logistics Partners: GMR Aero Cargo and Logistics, Alpha Crux, Ultima Antarctic Logistics, and South African collaborators played key roles.
