Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia laid the foundation stone for the ₹233 crore Integrated Sohra Tourism Circuit in Meghalaya under the PM-DevINE scheme, aiming to transform Sohra into a model for responsible tourism. The event, held on November 1, 2025, in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), Meghalaya, marks a major push to develop sustainable tourism infrastructure in the Northeast. Scindia, along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, launched the project under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE), which focuses on inclusive growth and ecological preservation. Project Highlights - Investment: Over ₹233 crore allocated for the development of the tourism circuit. - Key Attractions to be Developed: - Nohkalikai Falls - Mawsmai Eco Park - Arwah and Mawsmai Caves - Nohsngithiang Falls - Wah Kaba Falls - Shella Riverside - Wah Kaliar Canyon Viewpoint. - Goals: - Promote community-led, climate-resilient tourism. - Enhance visitor experience while preserving local ecology and heritage. - Generate employment and boost local livelihoods. Ministerial Remarks Scindia described Meghalaya as “a heaven on earth,” emphasizing the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness. He stated that the Sohra Tourism Circuit would serve as a benchmark for responsible tourism across India, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make the Northeast a pillar of India’s growth story. This initiative is expected to redefine eco-tourism standards and position Sohra as a global destination for nature lovers and cultural explorers.
